Preschool Funding Guidelines

As a NSW Community Preschool, we are funded by the NSW Department of Education Start Strong Program. These funding guidelines require community preschools to prioritise children for 600 hours in their year before school (2 days per week).

We welcome children in our local community from 3 years of age, and we meet the priority of access guidelines for children who are eligible to go off to school the following year.

Kinburra Preschool gives priority of access to enrolment in accordance with government funding guidelines (as amended from time to time) and Kinburra Preschool Enrolment Policy.

Priority of Access

Priority of access is given to:

  • Existing students of the Preschool who wish to remain in the program for a second year of preschool.
  • Children who are at risk of significant harm.
  • Children who are at least 4 years old on or before 31 July in that preschool year and not yet enrolled or registered at a school.
  • Children who are at least 3 years old on or before 31 July in that preschool year who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Children who are at least 3 years old on or before 31 July in that preschool year who are from a family holding a low income Health Care Card.
  • Children with English language needs.
  • Children with disabilities.
  • Siblings of past students.

  • What can I do to help my child settle in to preschool?

Orientation is an important start for your child and family to connect to our Preschool. We encourage each child to attend the Preschool in the company of a family member before they start the day with us. This gives you and your child the opportunity to gain an understanding of our program, the lay out of the room, where to find things, provide Educators with additional information about your child and we can best support their transition and settling period. We provide a social story “I’m going to Preschool” for you and your child to read together before they start. Communication between home and the Preschool must be open and happen often to best support your child during this time. Ideally, your child will be settled at an activity before you leave, however some children find it hard to settle until their parents have gone. What works best is a set routine so try to establish the care routine from the orientation process. Being well organised and avoiding a rush usually results in a calm start to the day. Educators are always willing to discuss individual strategies or plans for your child.

  • What foods should I pack in my child's lunchbox?

Children are asked to bring their lunch in a lunch box with a lid that they can open. We try to encourage a balanced lunch box; examples could be a protein filled sandwich, sushi, pasta salad and snacks such as vegetable sticks with dip, rice crackers, homemade muffins or slices and fruit. On enrolment we provide a factsheet that will give you ideas on what foods to pack, depending on allergies we may also advise of what foods cannot be brought to Preschool.

  • Does my child need to have a rest at preschool?

Rest and sleep routines vary according to each child’s individual needs. We aim to make rest time a relaxed, quiet time for all children. We provide soft mats for children to lie on, please provide sheets if you wish for your child to have a sleep. Your child may wish to bring a security item to have at rest time. Children that may not want to rest or sleep are able to take part in Mindfulness which involves Yoga and stretching and learning how to calm our body and mind or participate in quiet activities such as board games or construction.
