Early Year Learning Framework

The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) guides educators at Kinburra Preschool in their curriculum decision-making and assists in planning, implementing and evaluating quality earning experiences within our setting. Kinburra Preschool is strength based and views each child as unique assessing children’s learning on an individual basis.

Rather than imposing rigid outcomes, the EYLF encourages educators to shape learning experiences around each child’s interests, strengths, cultural background, and stages of development.

The EYLF outlines a vision for children's learning, development and wellbeing. The vision can be explained through the themes Belonging, Being and Becoming. Beyond the vision of the EYLF are the 3 elements of the framework: Principles, Practices & Learning Outcomes.

For more information, read the EYLF document or check out the Department of Education's page on early childhood education.

Documenting Your Child's Learning

Educators at Kinburra follow a planning cycle to plan, document, respond to, reflect on and support children’s learning. Educators make many decisions about curriculum planning based on their professional knowledge, their knowledge of children and local contexts, conversations with families and their understanding of the Vision, Principles, Practices and Learning Outcomes of the EYLF.

All documentation is recorded in an online program called Storypark. Every child has an Individual Learning Plan where families can view individual and group observations, work samples, jottings related to goals, mid-year and end of year summaries and school transition documents. Children and families are also encouraged to contribute to the Individual Learning Plans. Educators plan a program based on observations, reflections, intentional experiences and the voices of children and families.

By embedding the EYLF into our day-to-day approach, we help children feel seen, supported and inspired to explore the world around them. At Kinburra Preschool, we use the EYLF to shape learning that promotes emotional wellbeing, cognitive skills, communication, social connection, and physical activity — all through play-based experiences that children genuinely enjoy. One of the greatest strengths of the EYLF is its flexibility. There’s no pressure for children to meet rigid benchmarks.

The EYLF also promotes strong partnerships with families, building an inclusive and consistent community where children feel safe, capable, and ready to thrive — now and in the future.

  • What is the Early Years Learning Framework in Australia?

The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) is a national framework used across Australia to guide early childhood education. It was developed by the Australian Government to ensure all children from birth to five years have access to high-quality learning experiences that promote their overall development. The EYLF focuses on three core concepts—Belonging, Being, and Becoming—and outlines five learning outcomes: identity, community, wellbeing, learning, and communication. It provides a flexible, inclusive approach to teaching, allowing educators to tailor programs based on individual children’s interests and needs.

  • Why is the Early Years Learning Framework important?

The EYLF is important because it ensures consistency in early childhood education while still allowing room for personalisation and diversity. It helps educators create programs that are developmentally appropriate, culturally respectful, and socially inclusive. The framework recognises that children learn best through play and exploration, and it supports educators to use intentional teaching and observation to guide learning. By focusing on the whole child—not just academic skills—it lays strong foundations for lifelong learning and wellbeing.

  • How does the Early Years Learning Framework benefit children?

Children benefit from the EYLF because it encourages them to explore, question, and grow in ways that feel natural and enjoyable. It supports emotional development, social skills, problem-solving, language, creativity, and physical coordination. Children are given space to express themselves, connect with others, and build a strong sense of identity. The EYLF also recognises the importance of culture and family, which helps children feel seen, valued, and understood in their learning environment.
