At Kinburra, we are proud to offer rich learning environments that immerse children in the wonders of nature. Our Eco Garden provides children with daily opportunities to connect with the natural world through hands-on exploration, care and discovery.

Each day, a small group of 10 children visits the Eco Garden with two educators. This intimate experience allows children to engage meaningfully with the environment, develop confidence and work collaboratively as they care for the garden. Children may plant seeds, water and nurture growing plants, investigate the soil, observe insects, collect produce and notice changes over time.

Through these experiences, children are developing an understanding of sustainability, growth and the interdependence of living things. They are encouraged to observe, question, predict and share their theories as they discover where food comes from and what plants need to thrive. The garden also supports children to develop responsibility, patience, cooperation and respect for the environment.

Our Educators play an important role in extending children’s thinking and supporting their natural curiosity. By providing opportunities to care for plants, explore seasonal changes and learn about the garden’s many living inhabitants, they help children build a strong sense of belonging and connection to Country.

The Eco Garden is more than a place to grow plants. It is a space where children can slow down, wonder, investigate and contribute. Through their daily experiences, they are growing not only flowers, herbs and vegetables, but also confidence, knowledge and a lifelong respect for the natural world.

Together, we are nurturing capable, curious and environmentally conscious learners.

At Kinburra, we believe children’s learning extends beyond the preschool environment. Our local community provides many meaningful opportunities for children to explore, build relationships and develop an understanding of the world around them.

Our Educators facilitate children’s learning in the community by taking them to familiar local places such as the library, Coles, local cafés and the fruit shop. These everyday experiences allow children to learn in real-life settings and make connections between what they experience at preschool and the wider community.

A visit to the library encourages children to develop a love of books, stories and language. Children can explore different types of books, listen to stories and learn how libraries are shared spaces where people gather, learn and discover new ideas. The children are also encouraged to discover books that link to current learning topics as a way to discover and extend upon their current knowledge and understanding.

Visiting Coles and the local fruit shop provides opportunities for children to learn about food, shopping and making healthy choices. Children may help select fruit and vegetables, notice different colours, shapes and sizes, and learn about the importance of fresh food. These visits also support early mathematical concepts as children count items, compare quantities and begin to recognise numbers and prices.

These experiences encourage children to ask questions, communicate their ideas and participate in the life of their local community. Educators support children by talking with them about what they notice, introducing new vocabulary and helping them reflect on their experiences when they return to preschool.

Community excursions are more than visits to familiar places. They are opportunities for children to develop independence, confidence and a strong sense of belonging. Through these everyday experiences, children are learning that they are valued members of their local community and that learning can happen anywhere.

At Kinburra, we are proud to support children as they explore, connect and learn within the community that surrounds them.

At Kinburra, we are proud to offer rich learning environments that immerse children in the wonders of nature and animal habitats. This year, the Kinburra children have continued to deepen their curiosity and engagement through hands-on experiences with our Native Beehive, Frog Pond, and the newly installed Lizard Lounge.

Through these explorations, children are developing a strong sense of belonging within the ecosystem. They are learning to care for local biodiversity while building respect and understanding for the natural environment. By observing, questioning, predicting, and hypothesising, they are uncovering the interdependence between land, people, plants, and animals. These experiences align with Outcome 2.4 and 4.2 of the Early Years Learning Framework by fostering inquiry-based learning and critical thinking skills.

Our Educators play a vital role in guiding this journey. By providing meaningful opportunities to Care for Country and connect with animals, plants, lands, and waterways, they help children strengthen their knowledge and appreciation of the environment.

Family and community partnerships further enrich these experiences. Highlights include incursions with Anna from Eco Nest, visits to the local library to expand knowledge, and contributions from family members who share their expertise in environmental and ecological fields. These collaborations ensure that children not only learn about nature but also build lasting connections with their community.

At Kinburra, events such as Mother's, Father’s and Grandparent’s Day are a special opportunity to celebrate the vital role families play in children’s learning and development. Ingrained in the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), this celebration reinforces children's sense of identity and strengthens their connections with loved ones.

At Kinburra we are continually finding pathways to embed our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) into our daily practices. This journey is about more than words—it’s about meaningful action, reflection, and connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and histories.

Our vision for reconciliation is strengthening the relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians for the benefit of all. We believe working towards reconciliation involves a commitment to continued learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures and histories and acknowledging ongoing injustices to work together towards a better, more just future.

We apply this to our practice by being culturally responsive including a genuine commitment to act against racism and discrimination in any form. We aim to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ perspectives in all aspects of our curriculum and work collaboratively and respectfully with culturally and linguistically diverse first nations children and families.

We have also had the privilege of hosting smoking ceremonies at our Preschool —special moments led by Gawura Cultural Immersions, a local Aboriginal company that assisted us in connecting to Country and cleansing our space. During the year we’ve also celebrated key cultural events such as NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week. These experiences have been powerful not only for the children, but for our entire team, as we continue to learn and grow together.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, and our RAP is just one of the many steps Kinburra takes to ensure our preschool is a culturally safe and inclusive space for all. Together, we can raise a generation that understands, respects, and celebrates the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
